Harlem River House
A block north, from 151st to 153rd Street are the Harlem River Houses, the first example of large-scale public housing in Manhattan.(pp265)
the Harlem River Houses was completed in 1937 it was the first federally funded public housing project in Harlem. One of two New York City projects built by the Public Works Administration (PWA) during the New Deal(New Deal was a program aimed at creating appealing housing for a wide section of the population, not just the poor). The goal of the Harlem River Houses was to provide decent living conditions specifically
African Americans in a time of hardship during the Great Depression. It's the first example of large-scale public housing in Manhattan let alone Harlem. This then sets the president for better housing throughout Harlem making it better and more affordable. The Harlem River Houses represented a significant step towards improving the quality of life for African Americans, setting a precedent for future public housing initiatives.
